EVENT DESCRIPTION
The Groveland Trail Stewardship Summit is an event created from a partnership between the USFS and IMBA. Hosted by the Groveland Trail Heads, this 5-day event will include an IMBA Advanced Trail Building School, and a USFS Chainsaw Safety and Certification.
IMBA ADVANCED TRAIL BUILDING SCHOOL, October 17-18
IMBA’s Advanced Trail Building School (AdvTBS), lead by experienced builders from the Trail Solutions program, is a great way to learn pro techniques for constructing bike-specific trails by both hand and mechanized techniques. The two-day course focuses on practical experience so be prepared to get dirty and learn!
This class will focus on a large variety of topics including building technical features, flow trails, berms, rollers, jumps, drainage on flow trails, and more. Whether you’ve got years of building under your belt or you’ve just started designing and building trails, this class will be a great opportunity to share, learn, network and stay up to date on the ever changing world of trail building and design.
Requirements: Attendees are expected to have a basic knowledge of IMBA’s standards for sustainable trail building.

USFS CHAINSAW SAFETY & CERTIFICATION, October 18-21
The USFS Sawyer Certification is a 3-day course that will focus on the protocol for operating a chainsaw in National Forests for the purposes of trail building. The aim of the course is to provide certification for attendees so that they will be in compliance with the USFS when operating a chainsaw on Federal land.
Requirements: Attendees need to have prior chainsaw experience and must be comfortable with the operation and maintenance of the equipment. All attendees must be CPR/First Aid certified.
SUMMIT ITINERARY
Friday, October 16th
-Meet and Greet at the Hotel Charlotte (no host bar). 6pm
Mix and mingle at the Charlotte Bistro and Bar. One of Groveland’s most-loved local spots. Enjoy local boutique wine, micro brew, and a menu that features and supports regional and local food. This is a casual affair, come to relax and connect before class begins Saturday.
Saturday, October 17
-IMBA Advanced Trail Building Classroom Day (map and directions will be available upon registration)
This classroom portion of the Advanced Trail Building School will build upon the basics of sustainable trail building as outlined in IMBA’s book, Trail Solutions: IMBA’s Guide to Building Sweet Singletrack. The class will focus on stewardship and design/planning.

A casual, outdoor/indoor party at the Mountain Sage Nursery and Music Venue featuring local cider, Sierra Nevada microbrew, and local catering. There will be a short scavenger hunt for prizes and a raffle for bike gear.
Sunday, October 18
-Hands-on Trail Building
Put your trail building knowledge to the test while executing re-routes and mitigation of existing trail sections. Attendees will have the opportunity to work on the first mountain-bike-only trail system in the Stanislaus National Forest
Monday, October 19-Wednesday, October 21
-USFS Chainsaw Safety & Certification. 8 am – 5 pm (map and directions to venue will be available upon registration)
This 3 day course will provide attendees an excellent overview of all aspects of chainsaw work for trails including: limbing, bucking, and felling operations. The goal of this workshop is to train and certify students in safe chainsaw use. It is designed to help students become familiar with OSHA and Forest Service standards, chainsaw maintenance, required safety equipment, proper saw use, situation awareness, hazard analysis and cutting plan. Successful candidates will be issued a USFS Chainsaw Operator Certification.
